92% of female agricultural workers have no social security coverage (survey)

A survey on “female agricultural workers” showed 92% of respondents among them said they have no social security coverage.

The survey launched by the Tunisian Forum of Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) based on observations, data collection and direct interviews with 500 women from 12 governorates, showed that agricultural workers confuse the social security system with other social protection mechanisms, such as free health care systems.

The survey also showed that only 22% of female farmhands surveyed said they were affiliated to the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM) with their husbands. This reveals how marginalised women are.

The survey recommended the creation of a new mechanism to strengthen the social security of female agricultural workers and the generalisation of its benefits to all categories of workers in the public and agricultural sectors, including death insurance and the creation of agricultural sector promotion programmes and support for small farmers through the establishment of incentives.

The survey also advocated the need to apply the social and solidarity economy and the training of women wishing to launch their own projects and encourage them through financial incentives and facilitate administrative procedures.

The recommendations of the survey included the inclusion and involvement of transporters (intermediaries) in the search for a solution to the problem of transport in the form of a cooperative society with a legal character whose mission is to transport women workers and provide labor to farmers away from exploitation and violation of laws.
