Integrated national plan implemented to assert the authority of the State

Mahikeng 24 April 2018: Following the recent outbreak of violent protests in Mahikeng and other areas in the province, Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structures (PROVJOINTS) took a decision to implement Integrated National Plan to Assert the Authority of the State (Operation Fiela II).

It is therefore necessary that all law abiding citizens’ genuine, legitimate concerns are not hijacked by those who want to cause mayhem by looting, damaging essential infrastructure, intimidation, assaults and other violent unlawful conduct.

Community Police Forums, Community Safety Forums (CSFs), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Churches, Ward Councillors, Community Based organisations (CBOs) are therefore called upon to actively take part in ensuring that criminals and those who want to subvert the authority of the state are not only isolated but are also identified and brought to book.

An urgent appeal is made to all communities that embark on protests, to do that peacefully and desist from committing crime, said North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.

We are calling upon members of the community to refrain from further spreading false, baseless and misleading messages that are circulated through social media platforms. The police will not hesitate to act against any person who circulates messages with intent to intimidate citizens or incite them to cause violence. The origin of such messages is subject to investigation.

Since the outbreak of the violence, 41 suspects have been arrested on charges of malicious damage to property, public violence, possession of suspected stolen goods and business robbery in Mahikeng, Mmabatho and Lomanyaneng. They have all appeared before the Mmabatho Magistrates’ Court and were released on warnings. They are expected to appear in the same court again on 29 & 30 May 2018 as well as 04 & 06 June 2018.
