Interior Minister and Italian counterpart discuss irregular migration in phone call

Interior Minister Kamel Feki and his Italian counterpart Matteo Piantedosi agreed during a telephone conversation on Thursday to “continue the exchange of information on the organisation of irregular migration crossings”.

The aim is to “uncover the parties involved in the journey of African migrants from sub-Saharan and Saharan countries to Tunisia in order to facilitate their transit to the European area,” according to a statement issued by the Tunisian Interior Ministry on Thursday evening.

Feki and Piantedosi reviewed the efforts made by both sides to strengthen the capacity of Tunisian security units to combat networks active in trafficking in human beings and organising irregular migration crossings.

The Tunisian and Italian sides stressed their “sincere will and firm determination to move forward on the path of consolidating these relations and upgrading them to the highest level, reflecting the depth and antiquity of the historical relations between the two countries and serving the interests of the two friendly peoples”.

In this context, the two Ministers reviewed the reality and prospects of the cooperation relations and partnership programmes between the Ministries of Interior of the two countries, particularly in the fields of migration and organised crime.
