MFA vows legal action against social media managers over online defamation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad has reaffirmed its commitment to take all necessary legal measures to uncover the administrators behind social media sites and groups and initiate legal proceedings against them.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said that this decision comes in the context of “online defamation campaigns” targeting the ministry as well as several diplomatic and consular missions.

The Foreign Ministry stresses that it will not tolerate individuals operating behind online platforms to undermine the symbols and institutions of the state.

Furthermore, the Ministry added that individuals who spread slander and falsehoods will face legal action.

As a reminder, the Ministries of Interior, Justice and Communication Technologies had previously announced in a joint statement that they would take legal action to expose individuals who manage electronic pages, accounts and groups that produce, disseminate and publish false information and misinformation.

According to the statement, the aim of these groups is to discredit, defame and undermine others, public security, social peace and the interests and symbols of the Tunisian state.
