Aucamp Directs Finalisation of Small-Scale Fishers Appeals

Cape town: The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp, has responded to concerns from small-scale fishers regarding the finalisation of appeals on decisions related to the allocation of the Total Applied Effort (TAE) in the Traditional Linefish sector.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Minister has directed that these appeals be finalised by 5 March 2026. This decision acknowledges the pressures faced by small-scale fishers and the crucial need for certainty among coastal communities who rely on responsible marine resource access for their livelihoods.

Minister Aucamp expressed understanding of the frustration and uncertainty felt by the small-scale fishers, assuring them that their concerns are being handled with empathy and seriousness. He emphasized the importance of lawful decision-making, pledging to resolve the issue swiftly while maintaining good governance.

The Minister has prioritized the finalisation of all appeals received from small-scale fishers, given the high volume and urgency of these matters. The current allocations are set to expire on 28 February 2026, and the prescribed 30-day period for submitting appeals lapses on 2 March 2026.

Aucamp’s directive ensures that each appeal is thoroughly and lawfully considered, reflecting the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and sustainable marine resource use in South Africa.

The department recognizes that these appeals raise significant issues related to the procedural fairness of the decision-making process, the reasonableness of outcomes, and the potential impact on the livelihoods and socio-economic well-being of small-scale fishing communities.

While the appeal process must adhere to due administrative procedures, the department is dedicated to concluding the assessments efficiently. Affected stakeholders are encouraged to remain patient as the department proceeds with the legally required steps to ensure proper evaluation of the issues raised.
