Johannesburg: Bafana Bafana will return to the global stage on Thursday when they take on Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup, with kick-off set for 9 pm. This match marks a significant moment as it mirrors the opening game of the 2010 World Cup, where South Africa, as host nation, faced Mexico in Johannesburg. According to South African Government News Agency, when Bafana Bafana walk onto the pitch for the opening match, it will be exactly 16 years after their historic game on African soil against Mexico. This time, the fixture unfolds in Mexico, adding a unique twist to the occasion. Fans across South Africa and the world are eager to watch the encounter, with many South African fans preparing to cheer on their team from public viewing sites, complete with vuvuzelas and national colors. The Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, in collaboration with HONOR, will be present at public viewing events at Tembisa Mall and t he Mall of Africa in Gauteng. These events are designed to enhance the fan experience, featuring various activities and rewards linked to the tournament. Bafana legends and artists will join the Deputy Minister, with the first 300 fans receiving a soft drink voucher and additional prizes available throughout the day. To ensure a safe and secure environment, HONOR has partnered with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and Gauteng Tourism for these events. Earlier this week, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos expressed confidence in the team's readiness to face Mexico.
