Cabinet urges public to monitor weather warnings

Cabinet has encouraged South Africans to remain alert and adhere to weather warnings from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). 'The country continues to experience inclement weather conditions ranging from unusual snowfalls, flooding, rainstorms, damaging winds and heat waves due to the effects of climate change,' Minister in The Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said on Thursday during a media briefing in Pretoria. Last week, SAWS encouraged the public to remain vigilant as the upcoming months of October and November could be affected by heatwaves, severe storms and the possibility of damaging winds. The weather alerts are communicated across all media platforms, including community radio stations. The Minister said Cabinet would soon receive a revised Integrated Disaster Management and Response Strategy that will cover disaster mitigation and response, including funding for disaster recovery.
