Cable theft suspect in court, four on the run

FREE STATE – A 37-year-old man, Aaron Mukutirwa appeared at Smithfield Magistrate court yesterday the 08 July 2021 on possession of suspected stolen property and the case was postponed for further investigation to 15 July 2021.

The suspect was arrested on the 8 July 2021 at about 03:00 with 159 kilograms of communication cables worth about R200 000.

This after an alert was received from an off duty cop when he heard a noise of a falling object outside his yard at about 01:00 and he went outside to investigate.

A white Colt bakkie was seen loaded with cable and suspects were still busy cutting some more.

Five men including the driver were seen cutting the cables from the poles and and the off duty cop alerted the Community Service Center.

The Police spotted the vehicle fitting the description given and they tried to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle drove off in high speed and they gave chase. The suspect’s vehicle stopped and they vanished in the dark but the Police managed to arrest one suspect.
