Sebokeng: Department of Social Development Acting Director-General, Advocate Gugulethu Thimane, has called on government and society to ‘roll up their sleeves’ to ensure that youth are afforded opportunities to work and become a meaningful part of South Africa’s economy. Thimane delivered an address at the Vaal EmpowaYouth Week engagement, which kicked off in Sebokeng on Monday.
According to South African Government News Agency, the five-day programme has pulled together stakeholders from across the board and communities to find solutions to challenges facing the area. Thimane emphasized the importance of partnerships, stating that the development of the country cannot progress without involving stakeholders from non-profit and faith-based organizations.
Youth in South Africa make up the largest segment of the population, yet they face the highest unemployment rate, which stood at 43.8% in the fourth quarter of 2025. Thimane highlighted the need for government coordination in addressing youth unemployment and proposed the creation of a database to better align industry needs with available skills.
She assured that the government’s Medium Term Development Plan focuses on tackling youth unemployment through three key priorities: inclusive growth to create more jobs, reducing poverty and improving living standards, and building a capable, ethical, and developmental State. Thimane stressed the importance of including young people in the mainstream economy through quality education and comprehensive care.
Addressing the issue of substance abuse and social ills, Thimane urged parents and society to take proactive measures in children’s lives, advocating for prevention strategies over reactive approaches.
