Churches in Elgeyo Marakwet, in partnership with Mwangaza Light, have launched a new tree-planting initiative to combat climate change and restore the environment. The churches, united under the banner of the Green Churches of Elgeyo Marakwet, aim to grow 1.5 million trees in the region. Led by Bishop David Kipsoi of the African Inland Church, the group has recognized that the church has a role to play in promoting economic, social and environmental aspects of life to support its members and glorify God. The church is partnering with the government to improve forest cover in the region. Elgeyo Marakwet County has witnessed a significant drop in forest cover from 37% to 29% over the past year, indicating the need for immediate intervention. A director at Mwangaza Light Celestine Lagat said that the organization is looking at planting over 1000 trees during the Easter holiday, starting with schools. They will encourage students to adopt a tree and nurture it to full growth, promoting a culture of environmental conservation from a young age. Ms. Lagat has called upon volunteers to support the initiative by urging every individual in a family to plant at least one tree. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the region, mitigate climate change, and promote a healthier and more sustainable environment for generations to come.
