Katlehong: The Operational Commander of Police in SAPS Katlehong, Lieutenant Colonel Ephraim Shezi, spearheaded a community engagement event at the Nigeria sports ground in Sector 3. He was accompanied by Sector Manager, Constable Sizwe Ndlela, Crime Information Management Analysis Center (CIMAC) Sergeant Chabalala, and Community Police Forum structures.
According to South African Police Service, the engagement was initiated in response to a persistent increase in various crime categories within the sector, with contact crimes proving particularly challenging. The police, in collaboration with the Community Police Forum (CPF), sought to engage with the community to explore alternative solutions and gather insights from local residents to combat these issues effectively.
During the engagement, community members voiced significant concerns, such as the lack of police visibility and allegations of corruption within the police ranks. There were claims that police officers were accepting money from drug dealers and shops owned by foreign nationals, with police vans from neighboring areas allegedly collecting money within the Katlehong precinct. Other issues included slow response times to complaints, the need for satellite police stations due to the distance of the current police station, and instances of individuals being turned away when attempting to report cases of common robbery, such as cellphone theft. Lieutenant Colonel Shezi addressed these concerns, advising the community to document incidents of corruption and report them for internal investigation and resolution.
