North west: The government has expressed its condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives due to a lightning strike at the Mphebatho Troop Festival held at the Dertig Sports Ground.
According to South African Government News Agency, the tragic incident occurred during the annual festival, resulting in more than 40 individuals, comprising mostly spectators and troopers, being impacted. Emergency services arrived promptly on the scene, providing immediate medical attention to those injured. Some patients were transported to Mathibestad Clinic for observation, while others required further medical care at Jubilee Hospital.
The incident claimed the lives of two people. The government has extended its condolences to the bereaved families and expressed wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured. Acting Government spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa commended the swift response of emergency personnel and healthcare workers, and assured continued collaboration with relevant authorities in monitoring the situation.
North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi, along with MEC for Health Sello Lehari, Mayor of the Moretele Local Municipality George Manyike, and other dignitaries, plans to visit the families of the deceased. The Office of the Premier announced that Premier Mokgosi extends his condolences and will also check on the survivors of the incident.
