A 31 - year - old cyclist received life - threatening injuries on Saturday evening when a group of as many as 10 men assaulted him in the western German city of Dortmund , police and the public prosecutor ' s office said in a joint statement on Sunday . The main perpetrator inflicted cuts on the cyclist . The police are not providing additional information about the weapon used in the attack , as it could affect their investigation . The attackers fled . The critically injured man was taken to hospital , where he underwent surgery . His life is no longer in danger , the statement said . The public prosecutor ' s office and police are now investigating the crime as a suspected attempted murder .
