Deputy President Highlights Importance of Voting in Honoring Sacrifices for Freedom

Benoni:South Africans are urged to exercise their democratic right to vote as a tribute to the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom. Deputy President Paul Mashatile made this call during a wreath-laying ceremony for liberation icon and former African National Congress leader, Oliver Reginald Tambo, at the Tamboville Cemetery on Tuesday.

According to South African Government News Agency, Tambo passed away in April 1993, a year before South Africans participated in the historic 1994 elections. Deputy President Mashatile emphasized that Tambo’s passing serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of voting, stating that every election honors those who fought for freedom.

The Deputy President encouraged citizens to reflect on Tambo’s values, which include democracy, ethical leadership, and justice. He urged South Africans to demonstrate active citizenship and responsible voting, in line with this year's theme “Honouring O.R. Tambo’s Legacy Inspiring Active Citizenship and Responsible Voting.”

As South Africans prepare for the Local Government Elections on November 4, 2026, Mashatile stressed the importance of respecting election outcomes and supporting democratic institutions as a way to honor Tambo’s legacy. He also highlighted the government's role in addressing societal challenges but emphasized the necessity of active citizen participation in nation-building efforts.
