Pretoria: Deputy President Paul Mashatile is set to inaugurate a nationwide initiative designed to foster cleaner, greener, and more inclusive urban environments. The Clean Cities and Towns campaign aims to mobilize citizens for community cleaning activities across townships and villages, promoting not only cleaner surroundings but also enhancing community spirit and pride, as stated by the Presidency. According to South African Government News Agency, the launch is scheduled for Friday at the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, Soweto. The movement is intended to advance sustainability, equality, and solidarity among citizens. The Deputy President's Office highlighted that this initiative will build on commitments made by the Deputy President at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Lekgotla earlier this year, focusing on addressing environmental and socio-economic challenges. Additionally, the campaign is part of a broader government service delivery effort aligned with the Di strict Development Model (DDM), for which the Deputy President serves as a champion. Deputy President Mashatile, alongside Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero, and senior government officials, will engage in clean-up activities that include tree planting and cleaning at the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication.
