Johannesburg: Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, highlighted Eskom's potential to lead a green and prosperous future through its research and development capabilities. During a site visit to Eskom's Research, Testing and Development (RTandD) Centre, the Minister emphasized the importance of investment in innovation and technology.
According to South African Government News Agency, Ramokgopa stated that Eskom's strength lies in its research and development, which can propel the utility to surpass its past achievements. The RTandD centre is equipped to test and scale solutions for both immediate operational needs and the future electricity landscape. Meeting emissions standards at Eskom's coal-fired power stations is a critical focus, with several projects underway to reduce emissions in compliance with regulations from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.
Ramokgopa noted that while other countries like China and Japan are advanced in emission-reducing technology, Eskom is making progress towards these goals. The aim is to continue utilizing coal as part of the broader energy mix while adhering to emission standards to protect lives near coal-fired power stations. The government plans to partner with advanced technology partners to domesticate solutions for reducing emissions.
Beyond compliance, Eskom's ambitions extend to renewable energy. The establishment of Eskom Green signifies the utility's commitment to exploring opportunities in green hydrogen and other renewable energy sources. Ramokgopa affirmed the government's dedication to this green path, ensuring a sustainable energy future for the nation.
