eThekwini Online Invoice System Processes Over 5,000 Invoices Amid Transition

Durban: The eThekwini Municipality has successfully processed more than 5,000 invoices through its newly implemented online invoice payment system, with an additional 2,982 invoices already approved for payment. This marks early progress in the municipality’s efforts to enhance efficiency and service delivery through digital transformation.

According to South African Government News Agency, the digital platform is a key component of the municipality’s strategy to improve operational efficiency, transparency, and compliance with financial management laws and regulations. Service providers are encouraged to collaborate with the municipality during this transitional phase to adhere to the new system requirements.

The online invoice system offers numerous benefits aimed at improving service provider experience and reinforcing financial governance. These benefits include faster processing times due to automated workflows, reduced manual handling, enhanced transparency with invoice tracking capabilities, and increased accuracy by minimizing human error associated with manual submissions.

Further, the system ensures compliance with financial regulations and audit requirements and improves record management by securely storing and providing easy access to all invoices. The municipality has reminded service providers to submit invoices promptly to help the municipality uphold its commitment to process payments within 14 days for Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMME), and within 30 days for other suppliers, as per regulatory requirements.

Service providers are advised to upload their invoices directly onto the platform. Those facing difficulties or lacking computer access can receive assistance at the relevant line directorates. Starting 4 May 2026, service providers may also visit Sizakala centers for support with uploading invoices to their profiles on the portal, with ongoing training initiatives and resources available to aid transition.

The municipality expressed gratitude for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders during the system upgrade, reaffirming its commitment to improving internal systems and strengthening partnerships with service providers to deliver efficient and compliant municipal services.
