Cape town: Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen and Deputy Minister Nokuzola Capa are set to chair the forthcoming Group of 20 (G20) Agriculture Working Group and Food Security Task Force Ministerial Meetings. These significant gatherings will be held on 18 and 19 September 2025 at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, Cape Town. The Department of Agriculture is organizing the meetings with a focus on data-driven approaches to tackling food security and fostering inclusive agricultural investment and market access.
According to South African Government News Agency, these meetings are part of a broader public participation initiative by the government, which aims to highlight and promote South Africa’s leadership role in the G20. South Africa’s G20 Presidency is being guided by the theme of Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability, with a strong emphasis on critical issues such as food security, sustainable development, and enhancing resilience to disasters.
The Agriculture Working Group is a crucial platform for G20 members, facilitating cooperation on agricultural issues. The group is particularly focused on setting targets to achieve the United Nations 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals. Since its establishment in 2011, initially aimed at addressing food price volatility, the group has evolved into an essential forum for supporting and advancing agricultural initiatives among G20 members.
