Gauteng Department Advocates for Albinism Rights Protection

Gauteng: The Gauteng Department of Social Development has issued a call for stronger protection, dignity, and equal treatment of individuals with albinism. This announcement coincides with the observance of International Albinism Day, which took place on Saturday, 13 June. According to South African Government News Agency, Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, emphasized the necessity for the protection, respect, and dignified treatment of persons with albinism. The government is actively collaborating with communities to combat discrimination and ensure inclusivity for all individuals. International Albinism Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the challenges faced by persons with albinism. These challenges include discrimination, social exclusion, and enduring harmful myths that impact their safety and access to opportunities. The provincial department expressed its ongoing work with communities, schools, and non-profit organizations to promote awareness, offer psychosoc ial support, and reinforce efforts to protect vulnerable groups. The department urged communities to report any instances of discrimination or abuse against individuals with albinism and to support ongoing awareness initiatives aimed at fostering understanding and acceptance.
