Tshwane: The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport handed over 130 operating licences to compliant public transport operators during a ceremony at the Koedoespoort Regional Offices in Tshwane. This initiative is part of the provincial government’s program to address the backlog in operating licences and stabilise the public transport sector.

According to South African Government News Agency, since last September, the department has issued over 800 operating licences, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving regulation and service delivery for both operators and commuters. Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, stated that the handover marks a crucial step in restoring order and enhancing compliance within the sector.

The MEC remarked that the goal is to develop a licensing system that is transparent, efficient, and fair, with a focus on bringing services closer to operators and delivering them within clear time frames. Diale-Tlabela stressed the importance of operators adhering to regulatory requirements, ensuring roadworthy and safe vehicle operations, and avoiding the transfer or rental of operating licences.

Operators are expected to respect road rules, provide dependable services, and contribute to a trustworthy public transport system in Gauteng. The department aims to continue implementing targeted measures to clear the remaining backlog and strengthen the regulatory framework, ensuring a safe and efficient public transport environment for all residents.
