Gauteng Education Online Admissions to Open for 2026

Johannesburg: Parents and guardians have been reminded that the Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) 2026 Online Admissions Application period for Grades 1 and 8 will open in the new week. The system is specifically designed for parents and guardians with children entering Grade 1 and/or Grade 8 in 2026, and will go live on Thursday, 24 July 2026, at 8am for applications.

According to South African Government News Agency, parents with children currently in Grade R must apply online for their children to be admitted to Grade 1 for 2026, as there is no automatic placement from Grade R to Grade 1. Applications for other grades must be made directly at the desired schools in the immediate area, as explained by Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, during a media briefing.

All parents are required to register new profiles as old profiles and previous login details will not be valid. After registering on www.gdeadmissions.gov.za, the system will guide parents to create login credentials, which must be kept secure for accessing the Online Admissions System. The process includes accepting the POPI disclaimer and reading the Terms and Conditions.

Once access is granted, parents need to complete the 5 Step Application Process. It is crucial to enter accurate details at each step and submit required documents within seven days of applying. An incomplete application, resulting from not completing all steps, will not be considered for placement.

Applicants must provide a reliable cellphone number to receive important SMS notifications and updates. Every step of the application process will be confirmed via SMS for verification purposes. Weekly pop-up messages and SMS reminders will ensure applicants complete their application, and notifications will acknowledge document submission and verification.

Parents are encouraged to use the Home Address Within School Feeder Zone option to view schools that cover their home address. Selecting a minimum of three and a maximum of five schools is advised to increase placement chances. All schools will be accessible for applications throughout the period.

The application period will close on 29 August 2025 at midnight, after which no new applications will be accepted. Parents are warned against scams that charge fees for application assistance, as the GDE offers free official support, and any scams should be reported.
