Gauteng to Intensify Tavern Crackdown Following Bekkersdal Shooting

Bekkersdal: Acting Gauteng Premier, Jacob Mamabolo, has condemned the escalation in mass shootings that have occurred in the province. This follows a mass shooting at a tavern in Bekkersdal, which claimed the lives of at least nine people and left 10 injured. According to South African Government News Agency, earlier this month, another mass shooting in Saulsville, Tshwane, resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, with 14 others injured. Additionally, at least three other incidents have been reported this year in Reiger Park, Westbury, and Olievenhoutbosch. Mamabolo announced plans to intensify operations aimed at shutting down illegal taverns, removing illegal firearms from the streets, and disrupting the networks that facilitate such violence. He urged community members to share any information regarding the shootings or other criminal activities with the police, emphasizing that the government will not allow criminals to terrorize communities. He also extended condolences to the families affected b y the tragedies, expressing sorrow for the loss of life and wishing a full and speedy recovery to those injured.
