North West: The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), in partnership with the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster, is set to host a community activation in the North West province to raise awareness on drugs and illicit trafficking. This event, part of Youth Month activities, will focus on promoting physical and mental health by reducing risky behaviors.
According to South African Government News Agency, the activation coincides with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26. This day aims to strengthen global action and cooperation towards a world free from drug abuse. The event will highlight services provided by the JCPS cluster, with key focus areas including evidence-based, voluntary services, alternatives to punishment, prioritization of prevention, and leading with compassion.
The ongoing challenges presented by the world drug problem and response impact the health, safety, and well-being of people in South Africa. A shift in drug policy approach is being advocated, as the punitive measures have proven ineffective in addressing drug-related issues. Instead, the emphasis is on evidence-based public health and social justice principles targeting individuals, families, and communities. The focus is on social protection and health care rather than conviction and punishment, as outlined in the National Drug Masterplan of 2019 to 2024.
