Government Orders Urgent Evacuation of Overwintering Team at Marion Island

Cape town: The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp, has ordered the urgent evacuation of the overwintering team at Marion Island, following the delayed departure of the SA Agulhas II relief voyage to Marion Island.

According to South African Government News Agency, the weather in Cape Town has cleared, allowing helicopters to land on the vessel, which is now ready to sail. The delays were caused by the unavailability of crucial fuel products needed to create the special polar diesel required for operations in extremely low temperatures. This situation led the government to prioritize the team's well-being.

Minister Aucamp emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of the team, which includes experts in meteorology, engineering, medicine, and communications. These individuals play a significant role in supporting South Africa's Antarctic research programme.

The SA Agulhas II is scheduled to depart on 14 May 2026 and reach Marion Island by 18 May 2026. The crew is expected to spend three to five days at the base before returning to South Africa, with an anticipated arrival on 28 May 2026. The operation's timeline is contingent upon weather conditions both at sea and on the island.

Minister Aucamp has reassured the public and the overwintering team's families that their safety is a top priority. He has mandated regular updates and a debriefing from the team upon their safe return. The insights gained from their experience will aid in enhancing future operations at South Africa's remote bases.

The department plans to provide further updates as the situation develops.
