Pretoria:Government has welcomed the voter participation in the Local Government Elections (LGE), while reminding eligible voters that Home Affairs is open for the collection of identity documents and the issuing of temporary identification certificates.
According to South African Government News Agency, registered South African voters are electing municipal councillors in the LGE. Deputy Government spokesperson William Baloyi stated that visuals of long queues on media platforms reflect democracy in action, as South Africans from all walks of life come together to make their voices heard.
Government reported that South Africans are turning out in significant numbers to exercise their constitutional right to vote and help shape the future of their communities and the country. Baloyi assured that any challenges experienced during the voting process would be attended to by the relevant authorities, encouraging voters in queues to remain patient and follow IEC guidelines.
The elections will determine who represents communities in wards and municipal councils, with elected councillors being responsible for improving communities, delivering essential services, passing bylaws, and overseeing their implementation. Additionally, voters were reminded that taking photographs of marked ballot papers is prohibited to protect the secrecy of voters' choices.
Government also urged voters to head to the polls promptly to avoid potential weather-related disruptions, as showers are expected in some areas, while those in hotter regions should take precautions against the heat. The call extends to all South Africans to continue demonstrating unity, tolerance, and mutual respect, fundamental to the country's constitutional democracy.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) reported a record 29.2 million registered voters, with the country’s 23,696 voting stations open from 7 am to 9 pm for the LGE. Voters within voting station boundaries at closing time will still be assisted. President Cyril Ramaphosa declared election day a public holiday to enable voters to exercise their civic duty.
