Heatwave Alert and Thunderstorm Warnings in South Africa

Hanoi:The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that the heatwave currently affecting northwestern KwaZulu-Natal is expected to subside by Tuesday. The heatwave, characterized by persistently high temperatures, has been impacting the region from October 11 to 13, 2026. Additionally, extremely uncomfortable conditions are forecasted for the southern parts of the Eastern Cape.

According to South African Government News Agency, SAWS has noted that a surface trough is anticipated over the central and western interior of the country this week, while a surface high will remain over the eastern parts. These conditions, combined with upper-air perturbations, may lead to isolated to scattered thunderstorms over the central and eastern regions.

Partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions are predicted for Monday, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms expected to develop over the central and western parts of the country during the afternoon. There is a possibility of severe thunderstorms over the Eastern Cape and southern Free State.

Similar weather patterns are forecasted for Tuesday, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms anticipated in the afternoon across central and western South Africa. Severe thunderstorms may occur over the Eastern Cape, the Free State, and southern North West.

SAWS urges the public and stakeholders to monitor official forecasts and warnings, which will be updated as more information becomes available. The public is also advised against sharing information from unauthorised or unverified sources. For regular updates, individuals can visit the SAWS website or follow their official media channels.
