Johannesburg: The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is poised to reveal its new President and Vice-President for the 2025-2030 term during the inaugural meeting of the newly formed Council on Friday evening in Sandton. This significant announcement marks the beginning of a new era for the council.

According to South African Government News Agency, this election is in accordance with Section 7 of the Health Professions Act of 1974, which mandates that Council members elect their President and Vice-President from amongst themselves at the inaugural meeting. This election comes on the heels of the recent official inauguration of the 12 professional boards for the 2025-2030 term. The process involved a national nomination and ministerial appointment, as outlined by the HPCSA.

The representatives of these newly appointed boards, along with the Ministerial appointees, will collectively form the new Council that will serve for the next five years. The Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, is scheduled to attend the Council’s Inaugural Gala Dinner this evening, underlining the importance of this event.

The election of the President and Vice-President is the final step in constituting the Council for the new term. This ensures stable governance and the continued fulfilment of the HPCSA’s legislative mandate to protect the public and guide the professions. The advisory highlights that this step is crucial for maintaining the integrity and functionality of the Council.

The HPCSA, along with its 12 professional boards, is tasked with overseeing the education, training, and registration of health professionals as directed by the Health Professions Act.
