IEC Warns Against Unlawful Use of Logo in Election Campaigns

Pretoria: The Electoral Commission (IEC) has raised concerns over the unauthorized use of its name, logo, and other intellectual properties by political parties, potential candidates, and their supporters in election campaign materials.

According to South African Government News Agency, the IEC issued a statement on Monday reminding all political parties, independent candidates, campaign teams, and supporters that such actions are unlawful and violate the Electoral Act. The Commission emphasized its constitutional role in managing elections to ensure they are free and fair, and clarified that it does not endorse or support any political party or candidate.

The Commission cautioned that using its name, logo, or branding in campaign materials could mislead voters and undermine public confidence by creating a false impression of endorsement. It urged all parties and candidates to cease unauthorized use of its intellectual property and ensure compliance with the Electoral Act.

Section 21A of the Electoral Commission Act prohibits using the IEC's name, logo, or any identifiers for purposes related to political campaigns. These provisions aim to protect the independence and impartiality of the Commission and prevent misrepresentation of its role.

The IEC stated it would monitor compliance and consider legal action if violations occur. As South Africa approaches the 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections, the Commission called for campaigns that uphold the law and promote public trust in democratic institutions.

The Commission further encouraged all eligible South Africans to register to vote or update their registration details on 20 June and 21 June 2026. Voter registration can also be done online at registertovote.elections.org.za, and voters can verify their details by sending an ID number to the SMS line 32810.
