Stellenbosch: The Justice Department has announced a significant event aimed at promoting social justice and education rights by hosting a Social Justice Walk in Stellenbosch on 16 June. The walk marks the 50th anniversary of the student uprising and observes the 30th Anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. According to South African Government News Agency, the event is themed "From Soweto to Social Justice" and aims to honor the legacy of the youth of 1976 while addressing modern-day obstacles to education, such as student debt and exclusion. The initiative seeks to reinforce the constitutional right to education and promote social justice, inclusion, and active citizenship among the youth. The walk is expected to feature participation from notable figures, including Professor Thuli Madonsela, former Public Protector and current Director of the Centre for Social Justice, and Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University. Leaders from Student R epresentative Councils across South African institutions, as well as representatives from government, civil society, academia, and community organizations, are also anticipated to participate. The annual 16-kilometre walk will follow the symbolic Journey of Hope route from Stellenbosch to Kylemore. This event serves as a platform uniting students, government leaders, civil society, academia, and community members to support young people whose educational opportunities are affected by financial challenges. The walk is part of broader attempts to enhance constitutional literacy, encourage youth participation in democratic processes, including the upcoming local government elections, and stimulate dialogue on student debt as a social justice matter, as stated by the DJCOD.
