KZN Finance Acknowledges uMkhanyakude Municipality’s Financial Discipline Efforts

Pietermaritzburg: KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers has praised the leadership of the uMkhanyakude District Municipality for its commitment to enhancing financial discipline and accountability in response to issues of financial misconduct. In a recent meeting held at the provincial Treasury offices in Pietermaritzburg, Rodgers engaged with uMkhanyakude Mayor Siphile Mdaka and senior officials to address concerns highlighted by the Auditor-General.

According to South African Government News Agency, the discussions centered around key issues such as non-compliance with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), overspending, unauthorized expenditures, and inadequate debt collection. Mayor Mdaka expressed the municipality’s dedication to addressing these challenges and sought the support of KZN Treasury to bolster financial management practices.

The municipality has taken steps to strengthen its internal oversight by appointing its own internal audit and risk committees, a role previously outsourced. Additionally, the return of KZN Treasury’s support to the supply chain management function was welcomed by the municipality.

Rodgers commended the establishment of the municipality’s audit risk committee as significant progress and stressed the importance of implementing the committee’s findings. He urged the municipality to ensure compliance with financial management laws and regulations through corrective actions.

The MEC highlighted his commitment to fostering a capable and ethical state, emphasizing the importance of clearly defined action plans and turnaround strategies with specific timelines. Rodgers assured that the Treasury team is ready to guide the process, while also underscoring the role of political leaders in monitoring and ensuring the success of these initiatives.
