Tunis: After three years of refurbishment work, the historic headquarters of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), located at the Mohamed Ali Square in Tunis, was inaugurated on Wednesday, May 1, on the occasion of Labour Day. The renovation work had cost nearly TND 29 million, official spokesman for the UGTT and member of its executive committee Sami Tahri told TAP. Recovered in June 1955 by the trade union after having been the headquarters of the French gendarmerie, the historic and symbolic building of the UGTT has today a new look. The UGTT headquarters will house trade union, cultural and social activities, Tahri explained, saying that "the UGTT building will be open to all artists wishing to exhibit their work," and that it includes high-level meeting rooms. The headquarters hads been refurbished in compliance with ecological construction standards, with the building covering a covered area of 4,000 m2. Source: Agence Tunis Afrique Presse
