Law Enforcement Yields Results in Gauteng During Festive Season Operations

Gauteng: The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has reported notable achievements in law enforcement through the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI) during festive season initiatives.

According to South African Government News Agency, the GTI officers undertook a range of enforcement actions, including issuing numerous infringement notices, discontinuing unsafe vehicles, making arrests for serious offences, and impounding vehicles operating illegally. These operations were carried out between December 22 and 28, 2025, across key areas such as Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni, resulting in the discontinuation of 45 vehicles, the impoundment of 30 vehicles, and 27 arrests, mainly for drunk driving and bribery.

The enforcement efforts also focused on ensuring public transport compliance, with findings of 187 minibuses lacking licence discs, 193 drivers without valid driving licences, and 65 minibuses being discontinued. Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, emphasized the department's strict stance against lawlessness, noting that activities such as reckless driving, drunk driving, and corruption are not tolerated on the roads. The MEC highlighted the importance of removing unroadworthy vehicles and unlicensed drivers to protect road users and ensure safe public transport during the high-risk festive period.
