Lebombo: The Border Management Authority (BMA) has resumed cargo operations at the Lebombo Border Post after a temporary closure last week due to political tensions in Mozambique. The closure was prompted by protests and reports of vehicles being burnt on the Mozambican side of the border. According to South African Government News Agency, BMA Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato confirmed that the Mozambican systems have been restored, allowing processing activities to resume at the KM 4 checkpoint. This development is expected to facilitate the full reopening of the port and enable BMA and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to address the current cargo backlog. The BMA issued a statement highlighting its collaboration with SARS to expedite cargo clearance. The Mozambican authorities have resolved system challenges to ensure smooth processing at the Ressano Garcia port of entry into Mozambique. Initially, the port reopened to manage the movement of individuals, but efforts have since been made to strea mline cargo operations. Travelers are advised to stay informed of travel updates when planning trips to Mozambique, as political tensions persist. The BMA and SARS will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure smooth and secure port operations for South African citizens and the broader trade community.
