Major Progress in Restoring Safe Drinking Water to Hammanskraal

Pretoria: The City of Tshwane In partnership with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and Magalies Water, continues to make significant progress in restoring safe and reliable potable water to Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria. This initiative is part of the broader Hammanskraal Intervention Project, which is being executed in phases to sustainably improve water quality.

According to South African Government News Agency, the project comprises four implementation phases, each focusing on extending potable water supply to specific households. Phase 2 (Module 2), commissioned on 29 July 2025, now supplies water to areas including Kudube Units 1, 2, 3, 6, 10 and D, Majaneng Moshate, Jubilee Hospital, and the Dominican School for the Deaf.

The statement highlighted that confirming the water quality and safety for human consumption took longer than expected due to technical and infrastructure challenges encountered during this phase. Among the challenges were operating in a Brownfield environment, integrating into an existing ageing network, and addressing multiple leak repairs.

Additionally, a September 2025 assessment by the City of Tshwane revealed that actual water demand is approximately 21 megalitres per day (ML/day), nearly double the original estimate of 11 ML/day, while the current design capacity for Phase 2 is 12.5 ML/day.

To ensure a consistent supply while final infrastructure work continues, the City of Tshwane, DWS, and Magalies Water have implemented several joint interventions. These include redirecting additional capacity from Module 1 and approximately 5 ML/day from Module 3 through the existing network to support Phase 2. Jubilee Hospital and the Dominican School for the Deaf have been temporarily excluded from the current water quality declaration process to focus on technical remediation and alternative water sources.

Water testing has been conducted following SANS 241:2015, South Africa’s national standard for drinking water. Recent results have certified the water supplied to specified areas as safe for human consumption. Meanwhile, work continues to complete water supply to Phases 3 and 4 of the project, with progress updates to be issued as each area complies with national water quality standards.

The efforts reflect a strong partnership between the City of Tshwane, DWS, and Magalies Water, aiming to ensure long-term, safe, and equitable access to drinking water for the Hammanskraal community. The initiative aligns with the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, advocating for universal access to clean water and sanitation.
