Pretoria:Work on the Mamelodi Magistrate's Court construction project has resumed after experiencing significant delays. Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, along with Deputy Chief Justice Dustin Mlambo, visited the site to oversee the renewed efforts.
According to South African Government News Agency, the project, which began planning in 2007 and had its original contract awarded in 2013, faced interruptions due to construction mafia-led stoppages and poor contractor performance. The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) terminated the initial contract in October 2023, having completed approximately 60% of the work.
Construction resumed on October 7, 2026, following the appointment of a new contractor with a contract valued at R241.26 million, including VAT. The project is expected to be completed by October 2028. The DPWI has taken direct management of the project, with its architect as the principal agent, to ensure timely completion and prevent further delays.
The DPWI emphasizes monitoring construction progress, early risk identification, and contractor accountability. It has also implemented the Integrated Social Facilitation Framework to improve community engagement and prevent disputes that could disrupt construction. This includes transparent processes for local employment and subcontracting opportunities.
Minister Macpherson highlighted the project's importance, stating that it reflects a broader commitment to enhancing public infrastructure management. The department is also pursuing legal steps to recover losses from the previous contract.
