Mantashe to Visit Steenkampskraal Mine for Mineral Development

Matzikama:Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe is set to visit the Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine in the Western Cape's Matzikama Local Municipality tomorrow. This visit is part of the government's initiative to advance the development of South Africa's mineral resources and enhance local beneficiation processes.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Steenkampskraal mine is recognized as one of the world's highest-grade rare earth deposits. It holds significant strategic importance for developing the country's rare earth and critical minerals sector, which is crucial to boosting domestic industrial capabilities and integrating South Africa into global mineral value chains.

The government emphasizes that building robust beneficiation and manufacturing capabilities locally is vital for adding value to minerals closer to their production sites. This strategy aims to support industrialization, generate employment opportunities, and contribute to sustainable economic development.

The visit will also serve as an opportunity to evaluate progress at the Steenkampskraal project and discuss the development of local rare earth processing and beneficiation capabilities. Ensuring compliance with South Africa's regulatory and environmental standards is a priority, particularly concerning the safe management of naturally occurring radioactive materials at the site.
