Mine Opening Marks Milestone in South Africa’s Economic Recovery, Says President Ramaphosa

Mogalakwena: President Cyril Ramaphosa has lauded the start of production at the Ivanplats Platreef Mine, describing it as a significant milestone for the company, the mining industry, and South Africa. The President’s remarks were delivered during an event at the mine on Tuesday, emphasizing the broader implications for the nation’s economic landscape.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Platreef Mine is recognized as one of the largest undeveloped precious metals mines globally, with substantial deposits of Platinum Group Metals. These metals are crucial for advancing technologies that drive the global green energy transition. The President highlighted the inauguration of the Platreef concentrator plant as a strategic move as South Africa positions itself as a partner in the global energy transition and the upcoming wave of green industrialization.

The mine’s ownership structure includes a 20% allocation of its B-BBEE shareholding to a community trust, benefiting at least 20 local communities. In addition, a separate trust holds a 3% interest for the benefit of non-managerial employees at Platreef. President Ramaphosa underscored the ongoing importance of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment in transforming South Africa’s economy, noting the progress in promoting worker ownership within the mining sector.

Furthermore, the workforce at Platreef is composed of 85% local community members, with a dedicated focus on local procurement and enterprise development. The President urged the community to protect this vital production facility, emphasizing the need for sustainable corporate practices that benefit local communities.

The President also highlighted the resilience of the mining industry, a cornerstone of South Africa’s economy, amidst global challenges. Statistics South Africa reported a 1.2 percent growth in mining production year-over-year, and the Minerals Council noted a significant rise in mineral sales for 2025, signaling confidence in the industry’s continued growth.

Finally, President Ramaphosa noted the mine’s opening coincides with South Africa’s preparations to host the first G20 Leaders’ Summit on African soil. He praised the achievement as a testament to the country’s steady economic recovery, showcasing sustainability in action and offering a hopeful glimpse into the future of South Africa’s mining industry.
