Minister Meth Hands Over R514 Million Contract to 15 Labour Activation Programme Partners

Mbombela: Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has officially handed over R514 million in contracts to 15 Labour Activation Programme partner companies in Mpumalanga, aimed at stimulating job creation in the province. According to South African Government News Agency, the 15 LAP partner companies are expected to provide training to over 9,600 job seekers after signing a pledge committing to the absorption of these job seekers in key sectors of the economy. Speaking at the handover event held at Mbombela Stadium, Meth emphasized that the initiative is focused on creating opportunities that will benefit individuals, families, and communities in Mpumalanga. The Minister highlighted that the contracts come with a requirement for the LAP partners to guarantee jobs for beneficiaries. She insisted that at least 70% of the beneficiaries should be recruited from the Employment Services of South Africa platform, a system designed to connect job seekers with available opportunities. Meth also drew atte ntion to the strategic importance of Mpumalanga's infrastructure, particularly the Maputo Corridor, which links South Africa to international markets through the Port of Maputo. This corridor is crucial for exporting agricultural produce, minerals, and manufactured goods, thereby supporting local economies and businesses. In addressing the broader challenges facing the labor market, Meth noted that a significant number of young South Africans struggle to find steady employment. She stressed the importance of government interventions in collaboration with societal partners to improve the situation. The LAP contracts are seen as a direct policy response to these challenges, aimed at enhancing employability and connecting job seekers to employment opportunities. The Minister expressed optimism about the potential impact of the program, noting that it combines skills training, work experience, and job placement services. She reiterated the government's commitment to supporting businesses and opening opportuniti es for youth, women, and people with disabilities. Meth concluded by emphasizing the importance of strengthening partnerships with the private sector to create more job opportunities and ensure that training programs meet industry needs. She highlighted the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee on unemployment, skills development, and SMME support as a testament to the government's commitment to tackling unemployment through collaborative efforts.
