Cape Town: The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile, welcomed the life sentences imposed on Mohammed Yaseen Claasen, 23, and Kyle Du Toit, 26, in separate murder cases. The sentences reflect the judiciary's dedication to holding offenders accountable for their actions and providing justice to the victims and their families. According to South African Police Service, the separate incidents that led to the convictions occurred in 2019. On June 11, a 20-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded by unidentified armed men in Athburg Walk, Hanover Park. Later that year, on November 6, an 18-year-old man was shot and killed by two unidentified gunmen near a petrol station in Hanover Park, with the motive confirmed as gang-related. The investigation, led by the Anti-Gang Unit, also looked into a case from May 28, 2020, where Philippi police found a 15-year-old boy deceased at a medical facility. Two other victims, a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, received medi cal treatment for gunshot injuries. The investigation led to the detention of four males, aged between 21 and 26. Although two of the accused were acquitted on March 27, 2025, Claasen and Du Toit were found guilty. On June 20, 2025, Claasen and Du Toit were sentenced by the Cape Town High Court to life imprisonment for murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and under the POCA Act.
