Mthatha Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit Intensifies Operation Shanela II in Qumbu


Mthatha: Mthatha Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) confiscated four vehicles suspected to have been stolen in Balasi and Mvumelwano localities in Qumbu on Thursday, 17 July 2025, during Operation Shanela II, conducted from 07:00 till 16:00. Two male suspects, aged 32 and 39, were arrested.



According to South African Police Service, the 32-year-old male suspect was found in possession of a Toyota Hilux D4D, which has Mbekweni Cas Number of July 2024, while a 39-year-old male suspect was found in possession of a Toyota Hilux with Kleinvlei Cas Number also of July 2024. Two other impounded vehicles are a Toyota Etios with Dieprivier Cas Number and a Toyota GD6 with Khayelitsha Cas Number, and further investigation in this matter is ongoing.



The duo will appear before Qumbu Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen vehicles.



The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, praised the commitment and vigilance displayed by the unit members in ensuring that vehicle theft is tackled resolutely, as it leaves rightful owners psychologically and mentally distressed.
