Namibia supports women rights and leadership: Theofelus

The upcoming Nala Feminist Collection (Nalafem) Summit to be held in Windhoek represents the government's continued support and advocacy for women's rights and women's leadership on the African continent, Minister of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) Emma Theofelus has said. The third annual Nalafem summit which will be held on 01 July was approved by Cabinet in May 2024. Theofelus said: 'The Cabinet's approval underscores Namibia's commitment to promoting gender equality and women's leadership on both national and continental levels.' During a Cabinet briefing here on Thursday, Nalafem Founder, Aya Chebbi defined Nalafem as an army of women taking charge of the African continent. She said that Nalafem symbolises women leaders who contribute critically to the continent, stating, 'Together we can create a more inclusive and equitable Africa for all.' She announced that various female leaders in Namibia are expected to attend the summit. Meanwhile the Nalafem Advisory Council chairperson, Rose Wachuka recognised the work done to rebuild post-colonial African countries, stating, 'It is easier to get women to the top than to keep them there.' 'We can create sustainable pathways for leadership, and ensure that gender equality is not just a goal, but a lived reality,' she said. Nalafem and MICT signed a memorandum of understanding at the briefing on co-hosting the third annual Nalafem summit. Theofelus, who is one of the 20 members of the Nalafem council urged all stakeholders to join the transformative movement. This year's theme is 'Women's Right to Lead' with six awards expected to be presented at the summit. The previous event was held in Nairobi, Kenya. Source: The Namibia Press Agency
