Taiz:Northern Cape The Northern Cape Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) has confirmed that comprehensive security measures are in place to ensure peaceful, safe, and secure Local Government Elections. Police have emphasized that violence, threats, and intimidation will not be tolerated during the electoral process.

According to South African Government News Agency, South Africans are set to vote in the Local Government Elections on Wednesday, 4 November, a day declared as a public holiday to allow voters to participate in the elections. Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the SAPS Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, stated that PROVJOINTS has undertaken extensive planning, security assessments, intelligence gathering, and stakeholder engagements to prepare for the elections.

The security plan devised by PROVJOINTS is intelligence-driven and covers all five districts in the Northern Cape. It includes coordinated deployments, enhanced police visibility, targeted crime prevention operations, and rapid response capabilities. Continuous monitoring of identified hotspots is also a part of the plan to ensure safety and security during the elections.

Operational strategies include the protection of voting stations, the safety of Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officials and election personnel, and the security of election-related infrastructure. The movement and storage of election materials are also secured as part of the plan. Deployments will be adjusted in response to emerging threats as necessary.

Lieutenant General Otola emphasized the commitment of SAPS and its security partners to protect lives and property, maintain law and order, and ensure that voters can exercise their democratic rights freely. Collaboration with the IEC, provincial and local government structures, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), traffic authorities, municipal law enforcement agencies, and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is part of the strategy.

PROVJOINTS has made it clear that any violence, intimidation, threats, or disruption of lawful political activities will not be tolerated. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to act firmly and impartially, investigating reported incidents and making arrests where necessary.

Political parties, independent candidates, community leaders, and civil society organizations are urged to encourage tolerance and respect. Residents are advised to vote peacefully and report any suspicious activities or election-related criminal incidents immediately.

The public is also urged to refrain from sharing unverified information or provocative messages on social media to prevent panic and maintain confidence in the electoral process. The Northern Cape residents are called to demonstrate tolerance, unity, and responsible citizenship to support peaceful elections.
