Kwazulu-natal: KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli emphasized that the Office of the Premier's 2026/27 Budget Vote is more than just a collection of figures, portraying it as a reflection of the provincial government's priorities and commitment to coordinated governance.
According to South African Government News Agency, Premier Ntuli presented Budget Vote 1 to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature in Pietermaritzburg, highlighting that the budget signifies the values and direction of the 7th Administration. Ntuli declared, "This Budget Vote is more than a set of numbers. It is a statement of intent. It tells our people what we value. It tells our people where their taxes go, and why."
The budget allocates R856.2 million for the 2026/27 financial year, distributing funds across Administration, Institutional Development, and Policy and Governance. Ntuli clarified the role of the Office of the Premier in providing direction, coherence, policy coordination, monitoring, and oversight, which are essential for the effectiveness of other departments.
Ntuli addressed the challenges faced by the 7th Administration, including the aftermath of the July 2021 unrest, climate change-related disasters, and ongoing economic difficulties. The Provincial Government has adopted a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to overcome these issues, aiming to restore confidence, enhance service delivery, and inspire new hope.
The Premier noted signs of economic recovery, with KwaZulu-Natal securing significant investment pledges and witnessing job recovery and economic growth. He attributed these improvements to major infrastructure projects and pointed to a decline in key crime categories, indicating enhanced public safety.
To bolster coordinated governance, Ntuli announced the operationalization of six provincial councils chaired by the Premier, focusing on issues such as crime, climate change, economic development, and social cohesion. The Human Resource Development Council is tasked with addressing skills shortages and aligning education with labor market needs.
Ntuli committed to strengthening integrated service delivery through initiatives like Operation Sukuma Sakhe and the District Development Model. Despite challenges, efforts are underway to revitalize OSS War Rooms, improve accountability, and accelerate infrastructure delivery.
The Premier also highlighted flagship programs addressing undocumented migration, gender-based violence, and investment in secondary cities. Regarding the Zulu Monarchy, Ntuli assured the government's commitment to modernizing governance while preserving tradition, with efforts to strengthen the Zulu Royal Household Trust and explore sustainable revenue opportunities.
Overall, Ntuli reaffirmed the Office of the Premier's dedication to building a capable, ethical, and coordinated provincial administration.
