Johannesburg: Over 14,000 suspects have been arrested across the country under Operation Shanela this past week. The South African Police Service (SAPS) announced on Monday that a total of 14,790 individuals were apprehended between 30 June and 6 July 2025.
According to South African Government News Agency, these arrests resulted from various police actions and crime-fighting activities, including tracking operations, roadblocks, high visibility patrols, stop and searches, as well as tracing of wanted suspects. SAPS reported several significant arrests across the country through Operation Shanela, highlighting the dedication to curbing crime.
Among the arrests, 2,365 wanted suspects were detained for various serious and violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, and business and house robberies. Specifically, 174 individuals were arrested for murder, with the highest numbers in the Western Cape (39), followed by Gauteng (33) and KwaZulu-Natal (33). Additionally, 137 suspects were apprehended for attempted murder, and 99 were arrested for rape, with Gauteng leading with 26 arrests.
Furthermore, 1,232 suspects faced charges for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while 286 drug dealers were arrested. A notable 2,515 individuals were arrested for possession of drugs, with the Western Cape accounting for the majority (1,392). The operations also led to 64 arrests for illegal possession of firearms and seven arrests for human trafficking. Road safety was also a focus, with 826 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, predominantly in Gauteng (229), the Western Cape (195), and Mpumalanga (156).
In terms of recoveries and confiscations, the police registered significant successes. A total of 106 firearms and 1,355 rounds of ammunition were confiscated, along with the recovery of 37 hijacked and stolen vehicles.
Highlights of major takedowns included incidents in various provinces. In the Eastern Cape, six suspects were arrested following a fatal stabbing incident in Jeffrey’s Bay. The Northern Cape’s Operation Shanela II resulted in 236 arrests for serious crimes. In Mpumalanga, police intercepted a dagga smuggling operation at the Waverley Port of Entry, seizing dagga worth R1.1 million.
Significant drug busts and arrests also occurred in Limpopo, where a Scania truck was intercepted, and two foreign nationals were arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs worth R2.6 million. Gauteng saw a dramatic confrontation on the N3 highway, where three suspected cash-in-transit robbers were fatally wounded in a police shootout. Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, a foiled cash-in-transit robbery led to the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of firearms and a vehicle.
The police emphasized their commitment to continuing these operations to assert state authority and ensure the safety and security of all South Africans and visitors.
