Petrol Prices Set to Increase from Wednesday: Department Announces Adjustments

Johannesburg: The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has announced a forthcoming increase in the prices of all grades of petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin, effective from Wednesday, 2 July 2025. These adjustments reflect the latest monthly pricing updates.

According to South African Government News Agency, the planned fuel price changes include a 55 cents increase for Petrol 93 (ULP and LRP) and a 52 cents increase for Petrol 95 (ULP and LRP). Diesel prices will also rise, with a hike of 82 cents for 0.05% sulphur diesel and 84 cents for 0.005% sulphur diesel. Additionally, the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will see an increase of 67 cents, while the Single Maximum National Retail Price for illuminating paraffin will increase by 89 cents.

In contrast, the retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is expected to decrease by 57 cents nationwide, except in the Western Cape, where it will increase by R1.90 per kilogram. The department attributes these changes to several factors, including a rise in Brent Crude oil prices. The average Brent Crude oil price increased from 63.95 USD to 69.36 USD during the review period, primarily due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East between Israel and Iran, which have raised concerns about potential crude oil supply disruptions.

The DMPR explained that the average international petroleum product prices have mirrored the upward trend of crude oil prices. This resulted in higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin by 68.45 cents per litre, 100.48 cents per litre, and 83.20 cents per litre, respectively. However, the prices of Propane and Butane saw a slight decrease during the same period.

Furthermore, a 14% increase in Supply Cost Recovery on the Maximum Refinery Gate Price (MRGP) for LPGas imported through the Port of Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape has been approved. This measure will be in place for 24 months, with the interim MRGP in the Western Cape set at R15.22 per metric ton, excluding VAT, from 2 July 2025 to 5 August 2025. Consequently, the Maximum Retail Price of LPGas in the Western Cape will be R36.08, effective from 2 July 2025.
