Johannesburg: The Electoral Commission (IEC) has issued a reminder to political parties and independent candidates planning to participate in the 2026 Local Government Elections about the upcoming deadline for candidate nominations. The deadline for the submission and completion of these nominations is set for Friday, 28 August.
According to South African Government News Agency, the IEC emphasized the importance of adhering to the deadline to ensure a smooth transition to the post-nomination phase of the election process. The Local Government Elections are scheduled to take place on 4 November 2026, and the commission has clearly stated that the election timetable is fixed and non-negotiable.
The IEC has also highlighted that no changes to nominations will be accepted after the 5 pm deadline on the stipulated day. This includes the closure of the Online Candidate Nomination System (OCNS) to any further submissions, and the restriction on accessing IEC Offices post-deadline for submission purposes.
The Commission has urged all interested parties and candidates to make use of the resources available on the IEC website or to reach out via the provided contact information for any additional guidance needed in the nomination process.
