Johannesburg: Rand Water has confirmed that consumers may continue to drink water directly from their taps safely. This announcement comes in response to rumors circulating on social media, alleging that the Vaal Dam has been poisoned.
According to South African Government News Agency, a WhatsApp audio clip has been making rounds, claiming that the “dam has been poisoned” and cautioning residents to boil their tap water before consumption. Rand Water has categorically dismissed these claims as false and misleading, reassuring the public of the safety and quality of the water supply.
Rand Water clarified that the process for ensuring water safety involves abstracting raw water from the Vaal Dam, which then undergoes a comprehensive treatment process. The treated water is subject to rigorous and continuous testing before distribution to consumers, including municipalities. The bulk water services provider emphasized that the recent water quality results confirm compliance with the South African National Standard for Drinking Water (SANS241).
Furthermore, Rand Water reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and stated that any significant issues related to bulk water would be communicated through official channels. The organization encouraged consumers to rely on verified Rand Water platforms for accurate and credible information regarding drinking water quality.
