Roadmap for introduction of 5G in Tunisia to be unveiled shortly

“A roadmap for the deployment of the fifth generation of mobile networks 5G in Tunisia is being developed and will be announced in the coming weeks,” said Minister of Communication Technologies Nizar Ben Neji.

It will set modalities and dates for the implementation of this technology which launch in Tunisia is scheduled for 2024.

“Pilot experiences were conducted to this end with telecommunications operators. This technology will be deployed gradually in line with the needs of different users (companies, administrations, etc.), Ben Neji Monday told reporters on the sidelines of Huawei ICT Summit, an ICT event held in Tunis by Huawei Tunisia in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication Technologies.

Addressing attendees, the minister said “5G will guarantee a very significant increase in speed.” It will also provide ultra-fast connectivity, reduced latency and increased capacity, thus paving the way for new possibilities and applications, especially those related to the Internet of Things and connected objects in general.”

“It will encourage us to redefine the limits of technological development and will be a key catalyst for innovation and technological progress in all areas, ” the official further said.

To guarantee the successful introduction of 5G in Tunisia and the promised jump in performance, it is crucial to ensure an ongoing dialogue between all stakeholders: government, regulators, infrastructure operators and telecom suppliers, the minister said.

The Minister also reminded of the thrusts of the digital strategy implemented by his department.

The strategy seeks to revamp and supplement the legislation governing the digital industry, ensure financial and digital inclusion of citizens, upgrade digital infrastructure and connect sectors and underserved regions and strengthen the capacity to host national and sectoral IT centres. This in addition to implementing a national Cloud and service Cloudification strategy.

Chinese ambassador to Tunisia Li Wan emphasised the importance of the global digital transformation which is gaining momentum across the world, changing production methods and establishing itself as a new driving force for development, growth and future cooperation.

The ambassador said China opted for boosting technology, know-how and expertise exchanges with its partners, including Tunisia.

The introduction of 5G has been widely contested in several countries around the world in relation to its potential impact on the environment and health.
