Boksburg: President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Roelf Meyer as South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States, describing him as a seasoned and capable envoy suited to strengthening bilateral relations. The President confirmed the appointment on the sidelines of the National Local Economic Development (LED) Summit in Boksburg on Wednesday.
According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa praised Meyer for his loyalty and patriotism, noting his distinguished career in various sectors. Meyer, who previously led the National Party negotiating team and served as a Cabinet Minister in the initial government of national unity, has been involved in international mediation efforts, enhancing his diplomatic skills.
The President highlighted Meyer’s involvement in mediation processes across different countries, underscoring his ability to facilitate peace in conflict situations discreetly. This experience has equipped Meyer to assist the South African government in various diplomatic efforts, making him well-prepared for his new role.
Meyer has already initiated engagements with key stakeholders in the United States, focusing on recalibrating South Africa’s relationship with the US. He has interacted with individuals on Capitol Hill and within various US departments, demonstrating his readiness to undertake the ambassadorial duties effectively.
President Ramaphosa noted that Meyer is expected to formally present his credentials to the US government, expressing optimism that the accreditation process will proceed smoothly, similar to that of Ambassador Bozell. He conveyed confidence in Meyer’s ability to represent South Africa’s interests and fly the national flag high.
