SABC Celebrates 75 Years of Public Service Journalism


Pretoria: The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is celebrating a significant milestone as its news division marks 75 years of public service journalism. The government has extended its congratulations to the SABC for its enduring role in informing, educating, and empowering citizens since its inception in 1950.



According to South African Government News Agency, SABC News has been pivotal in covering South Africa’s most significant historical events, from the struggle for liberation to the establishment of a democratic state. Over the decades, SABC News has evolved alongside the country’s democracy, maintaining its commitment to accessible and balanced reporting. This dedication has solidified its reputation as a trusted source of information for millions across South Africa.



The government also paid tribute to veteran journalist and International News Editor Sophie Mokoena, who is retiring after 31 years of service to SABC News. Mokoena has been recognized for her role in bringing global news closer to South African audiences, making international events more accessible and relevant. The statement from the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) commended her substantial contribution to public broadcasting and extended best wishes for her future endeavors.
